As the evenings get darker and the weather turns cold, more energy is required to light and heat homes and businesses. This causes a spike in energy demand between 4 and 9 pm, known as the “peak”.

Currently, Britain relies on turning on further gas power stations to generate enough electricity for this increase in demand. This year, there are fewer gas supplies than usual and the energy system is under increased pressure. While blackouts would be a last resort, it may be necessary to turn off power stations on particularly cold days when there is not enough energy from other sources, such as wind, to preserve gas supplies.
