The VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) Program is the world's most widely used voluntary emissions reduction standard. It provides a credible but simple set of criteria that will provide integrity to the voluntary carbon market. The VCS ensures that all project-based voluntary emission reductions are independently verified to meet a set criteria – defined as Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs) – which represent real, quantifiable, additional and permanent project-based emission reductions.

VCS is managed by Verra, a registered not-for-profit organization founded in 2005 by environmental and business leaders and based in Washington, DC. More than 1300 certified VCS projects have reduced or removed more than 200 million tonnes of carbon and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
